Purpose and Expectations The purpose of this web-inquiry is to get you thinking about current events and social issues before we begin reading the book The Outsiders. There are many social issues addressed in that book, and the media plays a role in influencing how people view the two gangs. I think it is important that you begin thinking about the social issues currently being covered in today's media. More importantly, I want you to consider the role the media plays in how we receive and react to the current events covered.
Introduction Social issues have been and always will be a part of American society. The media plays a major role in making society aware of these issues by creating visual, auditory, and written messages about them. In the last several months there have been many social issues addressed in the news, on social media, on radio talk shows, and online news articles. The media has not only kept the public updated on the progression of these social issues, but it continually broadcasts the negative and positive effects. Many people believe that there are more negative influences than positive from the media. It is now your job to consider the same question and decide what you think.
